Classroom Management and “Slow-Down Time”

Project Description: For the system-wide implementation of TFA, Trauma First Aide™ was taught as a ‘School Class Management’ strategy to all School Counselors, Social Workers, and School Nurses in the Santa Fe Public Schools District. In selected schools, teachers were trained in TFA-SFPS “Slow-Down-Time”, a simple set of skills to teach children how to calm themselves and regulate their own nervous systems. The goal is to provide an environment more conducive to focused attention to enhance learning and cooperation.

Pre-deployment Training: Building Resilience, Self-aid, Buddy-aid

MilitaryProject Description: A series of Trauma First Aide™ pre-deployment trainings was taught to soldiers in the 1st Medical Brigade, including army physicians, nurses, techs, chaplains and combat medics. The goal of the TFA military trainings is to build resilience in our warriors enhancing the Self-aid/Buddy-aid concept. The trainings include trauma education and early intervention using simple techniques and tactics that stabilize the physiological and emotional responses. The long term goal is the reduction/prevention of secondary traumatization and combat stress disorder.

 

Sangre de Cristo School DistrictClient: Sangre de Cristo CHP,

Project Description: Trauma First Aide™ was taught to mental health counselors at Sangre de Cristo Community Partnership, a not for profit behavioral health organization in Santa Fe that provides SBIRT services (Brief Intervention, Treatment and referral services) in Primary Health Clinic, Hospitals, School based clinics.

Project Description: Trauma First Aide™ Self-Care was taught to Consulars at the Foreign Service Institute. The consular’s responsibility is to respond to crisis and service to American citizens in times of emergency/ trauma/crisis. The focus of this TFA training was to provide trauma education and teach simple skills to help reduce or prevent secondary traumatization in self and others that can develop from working in hi stress environments, as is often the situation in US embassies throughout the world.

“Taking Care of You - Before Taking Care of Them”

Project Description: Trauma First Aide™ Self-care was taught to nurses involved with several gulf-coast natural and man-made disasters including hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the Gulf Oil Spill. The focus of this training was basic trauma education and teaching simple TFA skills that stabilize the nervous system and can help restore the resilience in health providers. The workshop goals was to stress the importance of ‘Getting your own oxygen mask on first before helping others”.

“New Perspective on Trauma”

Project Description: Trauma First Aide™ workshops were provided at a series of conferences in Bangor and Portland for the Maine Army National Guard titled “Working with the Military”. The purpose of the workshops was to educate mental healthcare providers working with military clients on how trauma effects the nervous system, how to recognize signs and symptoms of dysregulation in the nervous system and the need to provide a balanced physiological-psychological approach when working with trauma. Mental health providers learned simple TFA skills that are helpful to stabilize and regulate their clients for more effective psychological interventions. Mental health providers also learned the value of these same skills for effective self-care.

 

Papa Ola LokahiClient: Papa Ola Lokahi, Honolulu, HI
TFA for Native Hawaiian community leaders and health providers

Project Description: Training in Trauma First Aide™ was sponsored by Papa Ola Lokahi. the Native Hawaiian Health Board, founded in 1988 improve the health and well-being of Native Hawaiians and other Native peoples of the Pacific and the continental United States. The training was held at Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center and included natives Hawaiians working in mental health, nurses, Hawaii National Guard, military, veterans, first responders (fire and police), child advocates, teachers and traditional Hawaiian spiritual leaders. TFA was selected because of our cross-cultural congruency and broad application with multiple populations.

Project: Trauma First Aide™ was taught to the mental health staff and crisis counselors. Mental health providers learned simple TFA skills that are helpful to stabilize and regulate their clients for more effective psychological interventions. They also learned the value of these same skills for effective self-care.
